2 – The PGCE

A Postgraduate Certificate in Education course is essential for getting into teaching. They typically run for one year on a fulltime basis, and two years in part time. They are divided into Early Years, Primary and Secondary levels, and can be tailored to different subjects.

Most courses will be run through universities and colleges, or as part of flexible distance learning and Open University degrees. Options also exist for School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT), whereby a course is completed while working at a school. Most PGCEs require you to demonstrate some voluntary teaching experience in a local school. This experience can be gained by contacting a Local Education Authority and requesting a few days in a school.

middle of September to June for the following academic year. New trainee teachers need to register with the Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR) before they can be accepted onto a course.

A PGCE is broken into lectures and seminars with tutors, and experience within local schools, and covers 33 Qualified Teacher standards. The aim of the course is to instill good practices while ensuring that a student completes enough on the job experience to be ready for fulltime teaching.

3 – Further Courses

Trainee teachers can also take extra Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses, and are required to complete Training and Development Agency for Schools tests in basic literacy, numeracy and IT skills before completing a course. Prospective teachers will also have to pass medical requirements, while being subjected to a Criminal Records check.
