Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce (CEW) released a study in 2009 that looked at salaries and job prospects for 171 college degrees. While the subject of the top 10 college majors could be debated forever and never come up with a
conclusion, due to the subjective nature of the topic, the study put out by Georgetown gives a lot of interesting facts and statistics which could help you come up with your own top 10 college majors list. Hopefully this article will give you enough information to help you narrow your decision on the type of degree that you would like to pursue. We have shared some of the highlights of the study below.
For Starters…
In these tough economic times, some people have wondered if getting a college degree is worth the time, effort, and most importantly, money that it takes to earn one. This study shows that on average a full-time, full-year worker with a Bachelor’s degree can expect to earn 84% more over a lifetime than a colleague who has no better than a high school diploma.
While any college degree is always better than no college degree, not all college degrees are created equal as far as earning potential is concerned. For example, the highest earning major earns 314 percent more at the median than the lowest-earning major at the median ($120,000 for Petroleum Engineering majors to $29,000 for Counseling Psychology majors).
